Deception by Robert W. Mitchell6/27/2023 ![]() The contributions gathered herein afford scientists the opportunity to discover something about the formal properties of deception, enabling them to explore and evaluate the belief that one set of descriptive and perhaps explanatory structures is suitable for both biological and psychological phenomena.įigures Tables Preface Emil W. It offers a historical overview of the problem of deception in related fields of animal behavior, philosophical analyses of the meaning and significance of deception in evolutionary and psychological theories, and diverse perspectives on deception-philosophical, ecological, evolutionary, ethological, developmental, psychological, anthropological, and historical. Deception is unique in that it presents detailed explorations of the broadest array of deceptive behavior, ranging from deceptive signaling in fireflies and stomatopods, to false-alarm calling by birds and foxes, to playful manipulating between people and dogs, to deceiving within intimate human relationships. ![]() ![]() Mitchell and Thompson have compiled the first interdisciplinary study of deception and its manifestations in a variety of animal species. ![]()

Hamlet manga6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Even as the language is simplified for a modern and young audience, a good deal of the most memorable lines are kept intact as they are timeless enough that anyone could understand them. This GN version of Hamlet is startling close in spirit to the original play. (No Fear Shakespeare is a whole line of like-minded GNs created by Sparknotes, which is a company well acquainted with the minds of lazy and unwilling students.) ![]() So, how well did Neil Babra actually do? I mean, he did not have an easy task: to take a work of the Bard and turn it into a graphic novel that is both true to the original source and still entertain reluctant readers. Also, Ophelia, who is by far the craziest of them all (no one out-crazies Ophelia!). Hamlet vows to have his revenge, and goes freaking nuts in the process. The king's ghost tells Hamlet that his killer is his brother, now the current king and new husband of Hamlet's mum. There are probably few readers of this blog who are not at least halfway familiar with the story of Hamlet, but for those whose memory may be a bit murky, here's a recap: Hamlet's father, the king is dead. ![]() Review originally posted at Dangerously Cold Tea ![]()

The rational optimist6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The earlier study simply had samples too small to find significant differences.īizarre as this may sound, in evolutionary terms it is quite normal. Rich people are happier than poor people rich countries have happier people than poor countries and people get happier as they get richer. Had I only known it, experiments in laboratories by the economist Vernon Smith and his colleagues have long confirmed that markets in goods and services for immediate consumption – haircuts and hamburgers – work so well that it is hard to design them so they fail to deliver efficiency and innovation while markets in assets are so automatically prone to bubbles and crashes that it is hard to design them so they work at all. ![]()

The life as we knew it collection6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() This book lives up to the expectations set by its summary, offering a fun journal entry take on a natural disaster that turns into a dystopia. It’s very different from a lot of the other ones out there, since it’s 100% gradual natural disaster. In addition to the journal format, I liked the premise for the dystopian world Miranda finds herself in. I’m a sucker for journal entry books, even though I know rationally that no diary ever has as much content and exposition as is contained in these fictional works. And soon Miranda finds herself, her mother, and her two brothers struggling to survive in a world that increasingly bares no resemblance to the one she once knew. Slowly at first but with ever-increasing speed. But when a meteor strikes the moon things start to change. Worries about school, her after-curricular activities, and wondering how her family will work out with her dad having a brand-new baby with his new wife. Miranda’s journal starts out like any other teenage girl’s diary. ![]() |
